Sustainability

The unique beauty of our natural landscape is what gifts Matakanarama much of its spirit...

The festival simply couldn't be a success without treatment that respects this truth, so we plan accordingly.

In 2025, we recovered 70.2% of our festival resources from landfill with the help of Nonstop Solutions, 1,085.1 kg of material was recovered from landfill across the festival.

That’s the equivalent of approximately
109 full 240-litre wheelie bins

Our Recycled Cans Provided 102 Family Meals

We collected 254.8 kg of aluminium cans, equal to 37 full bags.

The cans were donated to Cans for Kai, an initiative supporting the Kai Ika Project in Tāmaki Makaurau. The proceeds helped provide the equivalent of 102 family meals, while avoiding an estimated 487.18 kg of CO₂e.

Our 2026 Sustainability Goals

This year we aim to recover at least
75% of all festival resources from landfill.

Initiatives include:

– Adding more bin stations across the festival and campground
– Investigating reusable or more easily recyclable cups
– Expanding special-recovery streams
– Organising camping gear recovery before the festival begins
– Working more closely with vendors to reduce incoming waste

Help us achieve a 75% Resource Recovery Rate in 2026!

Here's some ways you can play your part at Rama!

Bringing it in?
Take it home with you.

Anything you bring onto site whether it's tents, chairs, chilly bins, or personal gear, needs to leave with you too. Leave no trace!

Use the right bin!

Take an extra few seconds to check the signs. Mixed rubbish can stop otherwise recoverable material from being recycled or composted.

Empty it before you bin it

Scrape or pour any food or drink that may be in your food containers into the compost before disposing of them. Food and liquid contamination can turn recyclable containers into landfill.

Flatten and crush where you can

Crushing cans and flattening cardboard helps the waste management team handle and transport materials more efficiently.

Ask when you’re unsure

Our waste management team will be on-site to answer any questions if you are unsure which bin your rubbish belongs in!
